Requirements:

• Minimum 21 years old on date of appointment; Students 14-20 are eligible for appointment as CMR Cadets
• Submit an application
• A background check is performed followed by a screening by a membership committee, no felony convictions or crimes against persons
• Candidates must be "sponsored" by a current member or if no current member is known, contact the Captain of the troop you wish to join for sponsorship information
• Individuals are in an "Applicant Status" for a minimum of 90 days, during that period applicants are observed and evaluated as they participate in Ranger call-outs, training, and meetings
• Applicants are prohibited from possessing firearms¹, batons², OC Spray², or handcuffs² while on duty as a CMR Applicant, only sworn Colorado Mounted Rangers are allowed to be armed.
• Following the 90-day observation and training period, applicants are voted on by the membership of the Troop at the next regular meeting.   Voting is done by a secret ballot of members present at the meeting and acceptance requires a simple majority.  Prior to voting, members are advised of the outcome of the background check and screening.
• Newly appointed Rangers are on a probation period for their first 90 days.

¹ Rangers must qualify quarterly with duty sidearm and complete the "Shoot, Don't Shoot" and "Legal Liability" course prior to carrying firearms.
² Rangers must complete the ASP tactical baton, OC spray, and handcuffing techniques course before authority to carry while on duty is granted.
